Below is a screen shot of an antenna from http://accessories.gateway.com.  Notice the range is listed as "Bridge up to 5 miles" then below the picture of the antenna "Range varies from approximately 165 to 1750 feet, depending upon multiple variables."  Apparently the range depends on multiple variables like which description you read.
